Dec 27: With the death toll in Southeast Asia climbing, it's important to remember the holidays aren't just about bargains, toys and electronic gadgets, but for giving to those in need, either locally or overseas, who have nothing left.
What's troubling; however, is that almost as many people have died in Darfur, Sudan, but the international community has done little to stop this man-made disaster. The impotent UN can't even agree whether the conflict has escalated into genocide. When mother nature unleashes her fury on innocents, the world stops to mourn and lend assistance; when man slaughters his neighbours, the world tries to forget.
Dec 10: You! You belong in the closet. You want to deny other Canadians the rights and freedoms you enjoy. Society can't tolerate your kind of exclusiveness. You shout, "think of the children!" You whisper, "imagine granting them 'privileges' to marry, adopt and receive government services, while living next door to those people? It's against mother nature." You squawk about traditional values and our country's strained relationship with the U.S. Shame! Aiding prejudice, ignorance and inequality, and expounding your narrow views goes counter to this country's foundation. The law should be flexible and protect diversity, not restrict it.
Ultimately, nothing a gay or lesbian couple does has any affect on my life. Food, clothing, housing, taxes and national defense would remain unchanged in the face of same-sex marriage. The idea of same-sex marriage is no more offensive than inter-faith or inter-racial couples seeing their unions recognized by everyone. I am not threatened by alternative lifestyles or religious differences, so it's puzzling why factions of society find this issue contentious. Traditions can survive in an age of constant change if they are important and strong enough, but not at the expense of choice.
Dec 1: Much has already been written about CBC's, "The Greatest Canadian" television series that need not be repeated here. My candidate, Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson, should have won because of his influence on the world stage. Medicare, a highly regarded Canadian value, is not unique -- Europeans support it too. On the other hand, creating the United Nations peacekeeping force during the 1956 Suez Crisis forged a strong reputation for Canada. Though peacekeepers today suffer from under-funding and even disrespect, their impact on diplomatic and humanitarian missions are without equal. The Greatest is the most influential and revered among us. Pearson was a visionary that pushed Canada into the modern age.
Tucker Carlson, your asinine comments on CNN Wolf Blitzer Reports (Canadian Protesters Greet Bush Visit) make you look like a fool, and effectively turn the cable network into brainless entertainment. "Without the U.S., Canada is essentially Honduras, but colder and much less interesting." Having never lived in Honduras I can't properly respond, but Canada is generally seen as one of the best countries in the world. Besides, like my grandmother used to say, "I've been called worse things by better people!"
